Good day, beautiful souls! Coach Freddie here. I hope you’re having a fantastic week. Today, I want to share something that might just change your life: Your anger might actually be physically harming you.
The Hidden Dangers of Anger
Have you ever noticed how your body reacts when you get angry? Your heart races, your blood pressure spikes, and suddenly, you’re in full fight-or-flight mode. But what you may not realize is that frequent anger puts an immense strain on your cardiovascular system, increasing your risk of heart attacks and strokes.
And that’s not all. Anger also triggers the release of stress hormones like cortisol and adrenaline, which wreak havoc on your immune system, digestion, and even your skin. No one wants premature wrinkles and breakouts, right?
But here’s the kicker—your mind doesn’t distinguish between a real argument and the one you replay in your head. Every time you relive a conflict, you put your body through the same physical stress, keeping yourself trapped in a cycle of anger and self-inflicted harm.
Why Are We So Angry All the Time?
I get it. I used to be one of the angriest people on the road, inventing new swear words in both English and Afrikaans. But then I realized something: I wasn’t just angry in the moment—I was carrying my anger with me everywhere.
One bad driver turned into frustration at my boss, which turned into irritation at my neighbor, which turned into general dissatisfaction with life. I was living in an endless loop of anger. Sound familiar?
6 Powerful Ways to Break the Anger Cycle
So how do we escape this destructive loop? Here are a few techniques that changed my life—and they can change yours too.
1. Mindset Shift: Nobody Makes You Angry—You Choose Anger
This is the most powerful realization you can have: No one makes you angry. You choose to respond with anger.
I wrote this mantra on my car’s windshield with a whiteboard marker: They don’t make you angry. You choose to respond with anger. Every time I felt road rage creeping in, I saw that message, and it rewired my reaction. It was a game-changer.
2. Shake It Off—Literally
Ever noticed how dogs shake after a fight? They’re resetting their nervous system, telling their brain that the conflict is over. Humans can do the same! Next time you feel anger boiling up, try physically shaking it off—it might sound silly, but it works like magic.
3. Practice Mindfulness and Breathwork
Mindfulness for anger is incredibly effective. Meditation, deep breathing, and breathwork exercises like box breathing can calm your nervous system and help you regain control. Just a few minutes a day can help you reset and break free from the anger cycle.
4. Move Your Body to Release Built-Up Anger
Exercise is an incredible way to process anger. Instead of stewing in frustration, get moving—go for a run, hit the gym, do yoga, or even just take a brisk walk. Physical activity releases pent-up energy and resets your mood.
5. Talk It Out (But Not in a Loop)
Venting can be helpful, but constantly replaying the same frustrations over and over keeps you stuck. Instead of ranting aimlessly, talk to someone who can help you shift your perspective—a friend, a coach, or even a therapist.
6. Prioritize Sleep for Emotional Regulation
Ever notice how irritable you feel after a bad night’s sleep? Lack of rest fuels anger and makes it harder to regulate emotions. Prioritize good sleep hygiene by keeping a consistent sleep schedule, limiting screen time before bed, and creating a relaxing nighttime routine. You’ll notice a huge difference in your mood.
Final Thoughts: Rewrite Your Story and Find Your Inner Peace
Anger doesn’t have to control your life. With a few simple mindset shifts and daily practices, you can break free from its grip and start living a calmer, happier life.
